My personal dictionary: no words

Words in your dictionary are no longer flagged as spelling mistakes: names, brands, technical terms. To add one, click an underlined word and then “Add to dictionary”, or type it below. The list is saved in this browser only, never on our server.

A grammar checker that does not stop after a few paragraphs

Most free grammar checkers cap you at a few hundred words, then ask you to upgrade. Here you can check up to 200,000 characters in one go, roughly 35,000 words: a full dissertation, several chapters of a novel or every page of a small business website. The text is split into blocks, checked in parallel and put back together, and the progress bar follows the real work, block by block. There is no account to create and no trial period.

Powered by LanguageTool, on our own server

Every text is proofread by LanguageTool, an open source grammar checker with thousands of rules for English. It runs on our own server, not through a third party service. Its rules look at the words around each one, so it catches mistakes a plain spell checker misses: “I could of known”, “a apple”, “their going home”, “less people”.

    What the checker looks for

Spelling: typos, misspelled words, words missing from the dictionary.

Grammar: subject and verb agreement, “a” or “an”, verb forms and tenses, commonly confused words such as “its” and “it's”, “then” and “than”, “affect” and “effect”.

Punctuation: missing or doubled commas, extra spaces, capital letters at the start of a sentence, apostrophes and quotation marks.

Style: redundant phrases, repeated words and wordy constructions, shown as suggestions. Picky mode adds more of them, which is useful for a final proofread.

American, British and other varieties of English

“Color” or “colour”, “organize” or “organise”, “traveled” or “travelled”: the right spelling depends on your readers. Choose American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or South African English above the checker, and words that are correct in your variety will not be flagged. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

Proofread a web page or an entire website

Enter the address of a page: we extract its visible text, its title and its meta description, then check it like a pasted text. To proofread a whole site, the website spell checker lists its pages from the sitemap, lets you pick the ones to review, and builds a page by page report you can export to a spreadsheet. It is a quick way to clean up a blog, an online shop or a documentation site before a launch.

Rewrite a text in your own words

Need to rephrase rather than correct? The rewriting tool retells your text in a more natural style, keeping the same meaning and details, then runs it through our grammar checker.

What an automatic checker cannot do

No software truly understands what you mean. A correctly spelled but wrong word, like “form” instead of “from” or “manger” instead of “manager”, can slip through. A name or a technical term may also be flagged by mistake. Always read the suggestions before accepting them. When in doubt, the Merriam-Webster dictionary for American English and the Cambridge Dictionary for British English are reliable references.

Yes. There is no premium plan, no account and no hidden word limit. The site is funded by advertising.

Copy the text from Word, Google Docs or any editor and paste it into the checker. Plain text files (.txt, .md) can also be opened directly with the “Open a text file” link.
